Soil Time is a performance and film work that traces the ancient Muria Strait as a geological landscape intersecting with narratives of mythology, colonialism, and ecology. The former strait, which once separated the northern coast of Java, has now become land stretching across Demak, Jepara, Kudus, and Grobogan. These territories were shaped not only through natural processes of sedimentation, but also through a history of deforestation and extraction during the colonial period. The construction of the Great Post Road, for instance, transformed this landscape into an economic route that continues to develop today, while ecological changes and uncontrolled development have brought recurrent flooding, rising sea levels, and the possibility of water returning to territories that were once submerged. Soil Time moves from geological facts toward layers of colonial history, from memory and mythology toward speculation about the future of the climate.
