Jametmachine (2024-2030)
Tentang Proyek
Jametmachine adalah proyek artistik jangka panjang yang menelusuri tari vernakular melalui pendekatan salin-tinampil. Bagi saya, tarian ini berfungsi sebagai ruang ketinampilan sekaligus kepenontonan masa kini, yang kerap direkam, diproduksi ulang, dan diamplifikasi di media sosial.
Proyek ini berfokus pada bagaimana tarian ini membentuk pengalaman tubuh yang khas, sekaligus berupaya memeriksa status ontologis serta kualitas korporeal dari tari vernakular semacam ini, guna menawarkan kemungkinan perluasan diskursus koreografi dalam lanskap tari kontemporer di Indonesia.
Melalui strategi salin-tinampil, proyek ini menghadirkan peluang untuk mempertanyakan batas antara tari yang dianggap “serius” dengan ekspresi tubuh yang lahir dari keseharian anak muda. Dengan kata lain, proyek ini mencoba mempersoalkan hierarki nilai dalam wacana tari, serta membuka ruang bagi estetika vernakular untuk dibaca sebagai bagian dari praktik koreografi kontemporer yang sahih.

On the Project
Jametmachine is a long-term artistic project that explores the vernacular dance through the methodological approach of reenactment. For me, this dance functions as a space of skill-making as well as contemporary spectatorship, often recorded, reproduced, and amplified across social media platforms.
This project focuses on how the dance shapes distinctive bodily experiences, while simultaneously examining the ontological status and corporeal qualities of such vernacular practices, in order to propose a possible expansion of choreographic discourse within the landscape of contemporary dance in Indonesia.
Through the strategy of reenactment, the project creates an opportunity to question the boundaries between what is considered “serious” dance and bodily expressions that emerge from the everyday lives of young people. In other words, the project seeks to interrogate the hierarchy of values within dance discourse, and to open up a space for vernacular aesthetics to be recognized as a legitimate part of contemporary choreographic practice.

Tentang Judul Proyek
Judul Jametmachine secara sadar mengadopsi judul naskah "Hamletmachine" (1977), teks teater ikonik karya Heiner Müller yang menandai pembacaan ulang terhadap Hamlet karya Shakespeare. Jametmachine bukan terjemahan atau adaptasi Hamletmachine. Dalam konteks ini, “machine” menunjuk pada sebuah mekanisme tubuh-vernakular yang terus berputar: tarian, rekaman, sirkulasi di media sosial, dan produksi ulang yang tak ada habisnya. Dengan demikian, Jametmachine bisa dibaca sebagai upaya menegaskan posisi tari vernakular sebagai arena kritis. Di sini, “Jamet” tidak lagi sekadar istilah peyoratif, tetapi menjadi subjek performatif yang menantang hierarki nilai seni.
On the Project Title
The title Jametmachine consciously adopts the title of "Hamletmachine" (1977), the iconic play by Heiner Müller that itself re-reads Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Jametmachine is neither a translation nor an adaptation of Hamletmachine. In this context, “machine” refers to a vernacular bodily mechanism that operates endlessly: dance, recording, circulation on social media, and perpetual reproduction. Thus, Jametmachine can be read as an attempt to affirm vernacular dance as a critical arena. Here, “Jamet” is no longer merely a pejorative term, but a performative subject that challenges the hierarchy of artistic values.

Kerangka Proyek
Proyek jangka panjang Jametmachine dirancang sebagai rangkaian pertunjukan dan aktivitas yang ditempatkan dalam kerangka kerja performatif. Rangkaian ini mencakup (1) produksi pertunjukan tari Jametmachine sebagai pusat eksplorasi artistik, (2) penyelenggaraan lokakarya untuk membuka ruang partisipasi dan transfer pengetahuan, serta (3) penulisan sekaligus penerbitan buku yang mendokumentasikan proses dan refleksi kritis dari proyek ini. Selain itu, akan diselenggarakan (4) simposium untuk memperluas diskursus koreografi vernakular dalam ranah akademik dan praktik seni, (5) festival Jametmachine sebagai wadah pertemuan berbagai ekspresi artistik yang terhubung, serta upaya (6) pengarsipan yang diproyeksikan menuju museum Jametmachine.
Project Framework
The Jametmachine long-term project is conceived as a series of performances and activities situated within a performative framework. This series includes (1) the production of Jametmachine dance performances as the central site of artistic exploration, (2) the organization of workshops that open spaces for participation and knowledge transfer, and (3) the writing and publication of a book documenting the processes and critical reflections of the project. In addition, it encompasses (4) a symposium aimed at expanding the discourse on vernacular choreography within academic and artistic practices, (5) the Jametmachine Festival as a platform for the convergence of diverse artistic expressions, and (6) an archiving initiative envisioned as the foundation for a future Jametmachine Museum.
