Madura and Unfinished Conversations is an investigation of Madura (an island east of Java) and its relationship with Java. Madura is often seen negatively as a result of colonial prejudice because the Madurese are seen as rebellious and disobedient to Mataram rule in Java as well as Dutch colonialism. This work examines community relations in these two neighbouring islands, especially after the Suramadu Bridge (the longest bridge in Indonesia) which connects Madura and Java. However, this bridge does not necessarily make the position of Madura and Java equal, on the contrary, the bridge is like the expansion of Java's territory into Madura land. This work explores the forms of interaction, crossover, and negotiation between Madurese and other cultures.
